Old and new AC gases

It's all a little technical, but here's the short story. Very old air conditioning systems used notorious CFC gases, which made a massive contribution to the hole in the ozone layer, so they were outlawed many years ago.

A replacement gas, HFC, was introduced in the 1990s. HFC was definitely good for the ozone, but not really good for the environment, particularly global warming. HFC has now been replaced in modern vehicles and is referred to as "old gas". It hasn't been outlawed yet and many older vehicles still use it. If your vehicle was built before 2009, it is likely to be using old gas.

By 2009 (and in some cases earlier) many manufacturers introduced the new gas, HFO (HFO1234YF), which has proved really quite good for the environment and the ozone layer, and has virtually no effect on global warming. Hurrah!

On the down side, it is toxic stuff, and technicians who handle it must be trained and licensed. Once it is inside your air conditioning system it is safe, but handling it in the workshop needs care and skill. AC not cooling you down?

If your air con is not blowing cold, it has probably lost its refrigeration gas over time and needs recharging.

But wait! There's no point re-gassing your AC if there is an obvious leak. We inspect and pressure test your AC before we recharge it, and our high-tech equipment also cleans the gas and removes contaminants like water vapour.
